Urinary Symptoms in Prostatitis

With ageing, many men undergo urinary changes and experience urinary problems.

Prostate disease can be one of the medical problems that affects the prostate gland and lead to urinary problems.

Common prostate problems can be

PROSTATITIS

Inflammation of prostate gland

Inflammation of prostate gland

Prostatitis can be bacterial or non-bacterial

BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA (BPH)

Non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland

Non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland

Size of the prostate gland increases and may cause troublesome symptoms

PROSTATE CANCER

Cancerous growth of prostate gland

However, not all urinary symptoms are due to prostate changes and not all men who have prostate enlargement will have troublesome symptoms.

The most common symptom of prostate disease is difficulty emptying your bladder. Urinary symptoms may become noticeable enough that they require treatment.

Urinary symptoms commonly experienced with prostate problems include:

FREQUENCY Frequent urination during the day
Frequent urination at night [nocturia]
URGENCY Urinary urgency – the sudden and strong feeling of urgently needing to urinate
PAIN Dysuria (painful urination) (may require medical attention)
PROBLEM IN FLOW Urine stream force is weak to start and difficult to direct
Irregular stream of urine or dribbling for some time after finishing urination
RETENTION Urinary retention- a sensation that the bladder isn’t fully emptied after urination the sensation of needing to go again soon after urinating.

Although these symptoms often do not need treatment, you should see your doctor if they are causing you difficulty OR bother in your daily activities, as they can be successfully treated. Also, It will provide your doctor to exclude any possibilities of underlying disease.

Red flags OR symptoms to be followed up:

You need to see your doctor if you experience any of the below.

Being unable to urinate Painful urination Lower back pain
Any blood in the urine at all Painful ejaculation Fever and/or Chills
Any discharge from the penis Muscular pain General lack of energy
Perineal pain (pain at the base of the scrotum and penis)   Continuous or severe urinary incontinence which you are not able to hold
